Fujiwara no Nagara (藤原長良)

FUJIWARA no Nagara (Nagayoshi) (802-August 10, 856) was a Kugyo (court noble) of the early Heian period.

He became the eldest son of FUJIWARA no Fuyutsugu, who held the title of Sadaijin (Minister of the Left). He was a close associate of Emperor Ninmyo from when he was still the Togu (the Crown Prince), participated as Sahyoe no Kami (Captain of the Left Division of Middle Palace Guards), assigned with the Sangi (Royal Advisor) post in 844, and became the Gon Chunagon (Provisional Middle Counselor) with the Junii rank (Junior Second Rank). His promotion in rank was late compared to his younger brothers, FUJIWARA no Yoshifusa or FUJIWARA no Yoshimi but was granted with many daughters compared to both of his younger brothers, and prospered with many descendants. Especially, his third son, FUJIWARA no Mototsune was adopted by Yoshifusa, and produced many Tojo Family (Family Rank of Kugyo), starting with Gosekke (the Five Regent Families) descendants. He was also respected as an individual with generous and honest personality, and being the hard working individual. Since he was the maternal grandfather of Emperor Yozei, he was posthumously awarded with the ranks of the title of Sadaijin (Minister of the Left) with Shoichii Rank (Senior First Rank) in 877, and Daijo Daijin (Prime Minister) in 879.
